Pitzer -- a private, undergraduate, coeducational
college of the liberal arts and sciences -- is consistently ranked
among the best such colleges in the country. It is located in Claremont,
California, a city about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Pitzer College,
named for founder Russell K. Pitzer (1878-1978), became the fifth
member of The Claremont Colleges in 1963. From the start, Pitzer
offered an alternative liberal arts education focused on a deeper
understanding of humankind within a structure that allowed every
voice to be heard equally and fully. Pitzer College, coeducational
since 1970, today enrolls about 900 students in 40 fields of study
leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Some of the more popular
concentrations include psychology, sociology, political studies,
media studies, environmental studies and art.The Mexican border,
San Diego and San Francisco are one or two hours away by car or
plane. Ontario International Airport is a short drive from campus.
The community of Claremont, population 35,000,
has the atmosphere of a small town, with several parks, many trees,
numerous churches and a downtown area with a variety of restaurants
and shops. Campus Resources and Facilities : All campuses of The
Claremont Colleges are adjoining and collectively comprise about
265 acres (106 Hectares) within a 12-block area. Pitzer's specialized
facilities include art galleries and studios, the California Center
for Cultural and Social Issues (CCCSI), an ecology center, media
studies equipment and facilities, an intercollegiate science center,
social science labs, language labs, the Marquis Library and Reading
Room, a 24-hour computer center, recreation center and swimming
pool, a women's center, three dining and snack areas and an arboretum.
